On September 19, 2013, The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced that prostate cancer has been added to the list of diseases eligible for coverage under the Zadroga Act. Prior to that, in September 2012, 50 different types of cancers became eligible for coverage under the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act’s 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund. Any person stricken with the following cancers, who was below Canal Street for 80 hours or more from between September 11, 2001 and May 30, 2002 will be eligible for coverage under the Zadroga Act.
Illnesses include
- Cancers of the lip, tongue, salivary gland, floor of mouth, gum and other parts of the mouth, tonsil oropharynx, hypopharynx, and other oral cavity and pharynx
- Cancers of the nasopharynx
- Cancers of the nose, nasal cavity, middle ear, and accessory sinuses
- Cancers of the larynx
- Cancers of the esophagus
- Cancers of the stomach
- Cancers of the colon and rectum
- Cancers of the liver and intrahepatic bile duct
- Cancers of the retroperitoneum and peritoneum, omentum, and mesentery
- Cancers of the trachea; bronchus and lung; heart, mediastinum and pleura; and other ill defined sites in the respiratory system and intrathoracic organs
- Mesothelioma
- Cancers of the soft tissues (sarcomas)
- Cancers of the skin (melanoma and nonmelanoma), including scrotal cancer
- Cancers of the breast
- Cancers of the ovary
- Cancers of the urinary bladder
- Cancers of the kidney
- Cancers of renal pelvis, ureter and other urinary organs
- Cancers of the eye and orbit
- Cancers of the thyroid
- Cancers of the prostate
