How to lessen the likelihood of a scaffold accident

In the construction industry, the use of scaffolds is extremely common. With this, workers are able to work at height in a fast and efficient manner.

Unfortunately, just the same as a ladder, working on a scaffold increases the likelihood of a serious accident. Along with this, any accident could cause injury or a fatality.

While there is no surefire way to prevent a scaffold accident, there are several steps that construction companies and workers can take to lessen the likelihood of this happening:

— Comply with all OSHA regulations regarding how to work with scaffolds.

— Inspect the construction and design of the scaffold to ensure that it conforms with all OSHA requirements.

— Protect scaffold harness systems and suspension ropes from heat, abrasion and sharp objects.

— Make sure that everyone using the scaffold is also using personal fall protection equipment.

— Provide proper training to all employees who use scaffold.

— Never use a scaffold system that is defective in any manner.

— Follow all scaffold manufacturer guidelines with regard to use and assembly.

Along with all the above, it goes without saying that construction workers should be aware of others who are working on a scaffold system. With this, it’s less likely that somebody will do something below that can cause an accident at height.

In the event of a scaffold accident, it’s important for emergency personnel to arrive at the scene as quickly as possible. With this, all injuries can be treated without delay. In some cases, fast treatment is the difference between life and death.

Along with receiving treatment at the scene, the company should be made aware of the accident. This is extremely important, as the employer may need to report the accident to OSHA.

Last, but certainly not least, if you find yourself in this unenviable position, it’s a good idea to learn more about your legal rights. You never know if you are able to file a lawsuit until you speak with an attorney. Depending on the events surrounding the accident, you may be able to seek compensation.

Working on scaffolding can be dangerous, and even if you take steps to protect yourself there is always the chance of an accident and subsequent injury.
