A woman was killed and another man was seriously hurt when an unoccupied van rolled backward and struck them on a sidewalk at Broadway and 32nd Street in Astoria, Queens, police said.
An 80-year-old woman was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in critical condition. She was later pronounced dead. A 71-year-old man was also taken to Elmhurst in serious but stable condition.
The van’s driver got out of his car after assuming the vehicle was parked though it was actually in reverse gear, a witness said. The car rolled backward into a crowd of about 15 people, who jumped out of the way.
The injured woman was standing in the crowd when she was struck. The car continued to move backward and struck a food vending cart and the cart’s owner, who was the elderly man, police and witnesses said.
The van eventually came to a stop after it pushed the cart 25 feet and was wedged between the cart and the wall of a building. The van’s driver then ran to the vehicle and put it in park.
