Saber Mohamed, 20, was killed by a speeding car in East New York, Brooklyn, according to reports. Mohamed was a passenger in his friend’s Toyota Sienna when a speeding Ford Explorer blew past several stop signs and slammed into the Toyota.
Mohamed was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Mohamed’s friend, a 32-year-old driver, was treated for neck and back injuries.
The Explorer’s driver, Christopher Cates, 29, tried to flee the scene, but he was stopped by police. Cates was charged with manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, speeding and driving while impaired by drugs, officials said.
Hours later, cyclist Giovani Nin, 26, was killed in a hit-and-run accident while he was riding his bike to his girlfriend’s apartment around 12:40 a.m. The incident happened at East Tremont Avenue near Mayflower Avenue, officials said.
Witnesses said that a silver BMW X5, a luxury SUV, had struck the cyclist and continued driving.
Another bicycle accident occurred around 8 p.m. in Tribeca. A female bicyclist, whose name has not been released, was killed when her bike was struck on West Street by a white ford truck making a right-turn on Chambers Street, officials said.
The driver, identified as Samuel Silva, 26, of New Jersey, stopped a few blocks away from the scene. Police have taken the driver into custody.
