Crash Into Midtown Fire Hydrant Kills 1, Injures Another

Juan Avila, 33, of Jackson Heights, was killed after he was involved in a fatal crash around Sixth Avenue and West 54th Street around 3:41 a.m., police said. The driver, Shiva Sharma, 32, of Wyandanch, was later arrested and slapped with charges although it was unclear what all those charges were.

According to reports, Sharma was speeding on Sixth Avenue when he lost control of his Nissan Altima. The Car jumped a curb and struck a hydrant at 54th Street.

Avila, who was a passenger in the car, was rushed to Mt. Sinai Roosevelt Hospital where he was pronounced dead, officials said. Sharma was taken to Bellevue Hospital and was listed in serious, but stable condition.

Sharma was allegedly drunk at the time of the accident, officials said. Police are still investigating the incident.

For grieving families, it’s important that a full investigation be conducted. For that, a wise first step is to discuss the matter with a legal professional experienced in car accidents.
