Elderly Pedestrian Fatally Struck By Car In UES [Update]

Vincent Downing, 85, a well-known landlord and realtor was fatally struck by a car in the Upper East Side on Wednesday morning, according to reports.

Downing was crossing Third Avenue at 71st Street in the crosswalk when a blue sedan backed up on Third Avenue and pinned the victim against a parked, unoccupied box truck, police said.

When emergency responders arrived, Downing was found with severe trauma to the legs. He was rushed to Cornell Medical Center when he was pronounced dead.

The 83-year-old driver of the sedan stayed at the scene and was also taken to Cornell for emotional trauma, officials said. He told the authorities that he accidentally shifted into reverse. No charges have been filed.

For grieving families, it’s important that a full investigation be conducted. For that, a wise first step is to discuss the matter with a legal professional experienced in car accidents.
