Sunrise Highway Crash Leaves 3 Injured

Three people were injured after a car accident involving an allegedly drunk driver on Sunrise Highway near Speonk-Riverhead Road, officials said.

Peter Ethier, 26, of Westhampton Beach, was driving a 2001 BMW at a high speed when it rear-ended a 2002 Ford, prompting the Ford to roll over at around 4:30 a.m., police said. Ethier fled the scene by foot. He was located at his residence and taken into custody, police said.

All three people in the Ford were injured. The driver and a back seat passenger were taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center where they were treated for leg injuries. The front seat passenger was seriously injured and had to be airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital. He is listed in critical condition, officials said.

Police did not release the names of the injured victims.

Ethier was slapped with drunk driving charges, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, operating a vehicle without an interlock device, and traffic violations.
