Three people were killed and two people were injured in separate collisions involving motor vehicles around New York City on Sunday, police said.
Jose Contreras, 63, was trying to cross Webster Avenue near the entrance ramp to the Cross Bronx Expressway when he was struck by a black sport utility vehicle at around 1:30 a.m. in the Bronx, police said. Contreras was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was treated for severe body trauma. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police are still looking for the hit-and-run driver that killed Contreras.
Less than an hour later, a 22-year-old woman was crossing Guy R. Brewer Boulevard at 118th Road in South Jamaica, Queens, when she was struck by a silver minivan, officials said.
Authorities found her unconscious when they arrived at the scene. She was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where she was treated for head trauma and listed in in critical condition, police said.
At around 3:30 a.m., a 30-year-old man, who has not been identified, was struck by a vehicle while crossing Prince Street and Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan. Police did not release a description of the vehicle believed to be involved, according to reports.
He was found unconscious when authorities arrived at the scene. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital Center in critical condition, officials said.
Later, Besik Shengelia, 48, of Brooklyn, was struck by a car when he was trying to collect his things in the back seat of the car, authorities said. He was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and was later pronounced dead.
Just before 9 a.m., a 41-year-old man on a bicycle was struck by a gold sedan on Ninth Street and Fifth Avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn, officials said. The man, whose identity has not been released, suffered severe body trauma and was taken to New York Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
