A 12-year-old girl was hit and killed by a car in front of her school on Monday morning in Long Island, school officials said. The accident happened in front of her twin sister as the pair were crossing the street.
Gabrielle Johnson was fatally struck by a car after she and her twin sister had gotten off the bus and crossed the street toward Elmont Memorial Junior-Senior High School, district officials said. Johnson was pronounced dead soon after.
Police said that the girls were crossing the street against the traffic signal. The girls were not on the crosswalk when Johnson was struck, the police added.
“We’re devastated, we’re extremely devastated,” her older sister, Paula Johnson, told reporters. “We lost our little brother in 2002 from a drunk driver, and now Gabby’s gone.”
The 38-year-old driver stayed at the scene of the accident. He is not expected to face charges.
For grieving families, it’s important that a full investigation be conducted. For that, a wise first step is to discuss the matter with a legal professional experienced in car accidents.
