A van fatally struck a 77-year-old woman as she crossed a street in Brooklyn, according to reports. The accident occurred at East 21st Street and Gravesend Neck Road in Sheepshead Bay, when the 2005 Ford Econoline delivery van made a left turn and struck the woman. The incident was one out of three accidents involving pedestrians within a two-hour period, police said.
When police arrived at the scene, the woman, whose identity was not revealed, lay unconscious and suffered head trauma. She was transported to Coney Island Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The intersection did not have a marked-off crosswalk, but the van would have reached a stop sign before the turn, according to reports.
The van’s driver Zafroom Ghafoor, 23, of Midwood, stayed at the scene. He was charged with failure to yield and failure to exercise due care, officials said.
An hour before the Sheephead incident, a 67-year-old woman was struck by a 2016 Jeep Cherokee at the intersection of 39th Street and Queens Boulevard in Sunnyside, Queens, police said.
Police found the woman with a “partially amputated” leg at the right ankle. She was rushed to Bellevue Hospital and is expected to survive.
The driver stayed at the scene.
In the third accident, a 31-year-old-bicyclist struck a 65-year-old man as he was crossing the street on 60th Street and Eighth Avenue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, at around 5:30 p., according to reports. Both were taken to Lutheran Hospital where the pedestrian suffered head trauma and was listed in serious condition while the bicyclist suffered minor injuries, officials said.
Witnesses said the bicyclist was riding along 60th Street when the man crossed against the light. Police have not yet confirmed the reports.
