Runaway Taxi Kills Woman On Midtown Sidewalk

A 22-year-old woman was struck and killed by a runaway taxi on a Midtown sidewalk last week. According to officials, the taxi driver parked and stepped out of his vehicle to help a passenger around West 51st Street and Eighth Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Police are trying to determine what caused the vehicle to roll, driverless, onto the adjacent sidewalk.

The taxi struck Suhuyn Park from South Korea and a 21-year-old male pedestrian on the sidewalk. Park was rushed to New York Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition, but she was later pronounced dead from her injuries. The male pedestrian suffered minor injuries and has been released.

After the cab struck the pedestrians, the vehicle hit the back of another cab before it eventually came to a halt.

The 67-year-old driver, whose name has not been released, remained at the scene. No arrests or charges have been made. The investigation is ongoing.
