Anil John, 17, a Long Island college student and former Islip high school basketball player, was fatally struck by a car when he got out of his own vehicle to check it after a separate hit-and-run crash, officials said.
John pulled over on Crooked Hill Road near Suffolk County Community College after a fender-bender on Tuesday morning. When he got out of his car, he was hit by a 2009 Ford moving southbound on the road. John was pronounced dead at the scene.
Thomas Stapleton, 81, of East Northport, was the driver of the Ford and remained at the scene. He was taken to a hospital for observation.
No charges have been made. Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.
