Amtrak Train Derailment Kills 7, Injures Over 150 Passengers

A New York-bound Amtrak train derailed on Tuesday night near Philadelphia, killing seven people and injuring dozens more. On Wednesday morning, at least 65 people were hospitalized, including eight who were listed in critical condition, according to Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter.

The train had 243 passengers on board, including five crew members. The train originated from Washington, D.C. and was traveling to New York when it derailed on a track bend near Frankford Junction and Wheatsheaf Lane.

Six of the train’s seven cars were overturned. Some cars were so badly mangled that firefighters needed to use hydraulic tools in order to rescue people inside. Some 150 people had self-evacuated, climbing out of the overturned train cars.

Officials have already started contacting family members although not all of the passengers were accounted for, as of Wednesday morning, according to Nutter. Officials said that most of the passengers were not from Philadelphia and were most likely from Washington, New York and New Jersey.

The cause of the train accident was still unknown. Local, state and federal investigators, including the National Transportation Safety Board, were on the scene. The accident is still under investigation.

The attorneys at Morgan Levine Dolan have represented many people injured in mass transit accidents.  During the early stages of the investigation, it is imperative to get private attorneys involved in the process.  Too many times, the mass transit carrier performs the investigation and many pieces of evidence are either tampered with or ignored.
