Fire department retrieved people stranded in a seven-story 2nd Avenue building after the stairwell collapsed this past weekend. A man was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical but stable condition. Over 30 college-aged students had gathered on the roof of 159 2nd Avenue at E. 9 St. in the lower East Side on Saturday night for a party.
People fell over two stories to a platform below and many injuries have been reported.
Owners of properties are required to properly maintain and inspect their premises. A stairwell should never collapse, no matter how many people are standing on it. Our office has handled many cases against building owners who negligently cause injuries to unsuspecting people. There are very strict codes and building regulations which force owners to properly maintain their buildings. Experts will be needed to investigate this accident and to determine what went wrong.
