Garbage Truck Crash Kills 2, Knocks Out Power On L.I.

A garbage truck caused a major accident that killed two people, injured another, and left hundreds of people without power on Long Island early Saturday morning, officials said. A garbage truck t-boned a BMW sports utility vehicle, causing the SUV to burst into flames and toppling power lines at around 4:15 a.m. Saturday in Inwood.

The BMW was traveling south on Sheridan Boulevard and the private garbage truck was heading west on Bayview Avenue when the truck struck the SUV from the right and sparked a fire that consumed both vehicles.

At least two people in the BMW died at the scene, police said. An investigator said that the bodies of the victims were so badly burned that it would be hard to identify them. Police were trying to determine if anyone else was in the car at the time.

The garbage truck driver was taken to a nearby hospital where he is expected to survive his injuries.

The accident caused about 300 people to temporarily lose power. Power was restored to all customers by Saturday evening, utility officials said.
