Two Pedestrians Killed In Separate Car Accidents In Brooklyn

Just seven blocks apart, two pedestrians were struck and killed in separate car crashes in Brooklyn on Wednesday night, officials said.

Sofiya Ostrovskaya, 66, of Brooklyn, was the first victim of a fatal hit-and-run accident that evening. At around 7:15 p.m., she was crossing Cropsey Avenue at Bay 34th Street when a dark vehicle slammed into her, according to officials. The driver fled the scene. Ostrovskaya was transported to Lutheran Medical Center, where she died from her injuries.

The other victim, John Saldiran, 61, also of Brooklyn, was crossing the street in front of his home on Bay Parkway near Benson Avenue when a taxi cab struck him, police said. Saldiran was rushed to Coney Island Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The taxi driver, Naghman Mehdi, 21, was arrested for driving with a suspended license, authorities said.
