A high-speed car chase from the Bronx that ended in a crash in Mt. Vernon critically injured a female passenger who was holding a 2-year-old girl in her lap.
The chase began when officers tried to pull over a white 2014 Nissan Maxima after it was allegedly speeding west down Nereid Avenue in Wakefield, officials said.
The driver who was identified as Xavier Wilson, 18, refused to slow down or pull over, police said. The cops chased the car and when it crossed over into Westchester, they notified the Mt. Vernon Police Department.
The car eventually crashed into a row of parked cars in front of Greater Centennial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church at 4th Street and 8th Avenue three blocks from the county line, officials said.
The police took two uninjured men into custody, the driver and his front-seat passenger, while at the scene of the crash. Wilson was charged with reckless endangerment, fleeing officers, endangering the welfare of a child, reckless driving and operating a vehicle while impaired by drugs.
The 24-year-old woman, who was in the backseat of the car, was transported to Jacobi Medical Center where she was treated for severe head trauma. She is in critical condition, officials said. The 2-year-old girl is in stable condition.
